Interesting… I was thinking about an amp under the passenger seat. Maybe a custom enclosure for woofers in the far back against the back of the storage area (in front of the gas tank…).
You get enough sound from the dash and the rear... you didn't need to add anything in the kick panels?
Thanks for the info /Joe
Plenty of sound. But recognize that the jackwells are not all that large for a really deep bass. (Nor are my speakers true subs, just 8" 3-ways.) And the dash speaker is of course unenclosed so bass suffers, and things in the dash can rattle.
The amp allows me to bump the 35 Hz band and I do this in the back, but not the front dash where it just adds to the rattles.
I had to raise the passenger seat 1-3/4" for the amp. My wife prefers it this way because now she can see out of the car.

Anyone have this type, it has the iPod/MP3 conections and a possible CD changer - 4 channel 240 watts. Looks like a replacement for the original am/fm. Then thinking a replacement front speaker with the 2 channel tweeters and the sound bar for the back, it has 6 speakers and fits under the window in the back of the coupe. Any feed back on this set up ? Thanks Tim

I have this in my 64 ( Custom Auto Sound's USA6 ). It comes with I-pod plug in and I use this with their 10 disc changer. Works good. I did add a 250 amp for the rear speakers....

I bought an 8 gig iPod Nano, along with a small FM transmitter attachment, and I crammed the iPod full of everything from classic rock to death metal. The FM transmitter broadcasts without wires, the stock radio picks up the signal like it would any radio station and plays it through the existing system. You can select the station on the transmitter, I usually use 88.1. It has 3 preset buttons and can transmit in Mono or Stereo. The whole thing integrates with iTunes, it charges off of a USB port on my computer, and is completely wireless in the car.
I think it's a great solution, my only issue is that on the highway doing 70 MPH at full volume you can only hear faint vestiges of drumbeats.
Is there a radio rebuild and/or conversion kit for the do-it-yourselfer? A volume boost wouldn't hurt. I checked out some of the restorer links earlier in this thread, do they add an LED light on the dial face of all the conversions? I couldn't live with that...
I've thought about kick panel speakers, but my ankles don't hear all that well. Along with the stock replacement front dash speaker, I have a kicker box in the luggage compartment with 2 6x9s, but it's still not loud enough when all 327 ci's are......dancing...

Are you using the soundbar type speakers in the rear? I figured the iPod would be smaller, my kids have them with 30GB harddrives which hold enough music for a many day road trip without repeats. Thanks for the info. Tim

My kids have them with 30GB iPods, they hold hundreds of hours of music and video. I got them the FM receiver things that also charge and hold the iPods in there cars. That is why I'm looking to upgrade the radio and speakers so you can hear it over the sidepipes. They do rebuild your existing radio with new more powerful insides for about $400, there is some info in earlier posts. I checked them out online and also saw the replacement radio and speakers I'm thinking about. Thanks for your info as well. Tim

I just put this radio in my 63. The ipod sounds much better then the radio, clearer and louder. I put a new dual speaker in the dash with box speakers in the back. I may add an amp to the set up, but I'm not sure that it's necessary. At 70 mph I can hear the ipod fine. The radio gets a little drowned out.
I had the USA-6 with the CD changer, rear 6 speaker sound bar and dual voice cone front speaker. For the price Custom autosound charges this system sounds bad if not just plain terrible. I removed the rear sound bar and added Alpine 6 x 9's in the jack cover. This helped a little but it still sounded bad. I sent my original radio the Electro-tech for the 180 watt conversion with I-pod port. This made a HUGE difference. The new system sounds great. I kept the dual voice cone speaker up front with the Alpine 6 x 9's in the back. Go for the conversion, you will not be sorry. If you get the Custom Autosound system I don't think you will be happy.
Had my radio retrofitted with modern internals at Electro-Tech, Inc. Their work is very good and turn-around was about 3 weeks. Around $400 with the auxillary inputs. You have a choice of 2 or 4 channels at 45 watts per channel.

Nice conversion. They were a pleasure to deal with and replaced a damaged panel on my 65's case at no extra charge.

I actually got Yamaha house speakers (8" wolfer). I am going to gut them and make a "soundbar". I use both the I-pod and CD player. I'm happy with it.
I just read where some people do not like the sound of the USA6. I have had MANY people say how good ( some were really inpressed ) my system sounded.

Any idea what the difference is, since you have had both? I would think the guts and amp would be similar. Power wise the USA 6 is 240 wats versus 180 amps. Just wondering, as I'd like to go the iPod route versus the CD. Thanks Tim

Itza66 had the set up Im considering and says it sounded bad, switched to the conversion model, less watts but says it sounds better over the same speaker set up. I would think the conversion guts must be similar, unless the quality is much less. The conversion is 180 watts versus 240 for the USA6 model. Sort of puzzled?
Any other have similar experience either way ? Any other stock fitting radio's brands for a 65 ? Just looking for input, Thanks Tim

I just hated the idea of gutting my original radio. Now I have both, if I want, I can put the original back in as "original".
