I replaced the engine in my 62 last year with a rebuilt 327 I found on the net. I had the original radiator gone through at the same time. I am tying to determine the accuracy of the temp sending unit/guage. When using my IR gun to check the engine temp do I shoot the upper hose nearest the housing, the thermo housing itself or the area right around where the temp sending unit is in the manifold?
It was finally warm today in Dallas so I took it for a good run and then let it idle in the sun for 15 minutes. It never got over 220 on the guage and the gun showed a reading of 190 on the hose, 195 on the housing and 225-230 on the intake/TSU
how much is the rubber hoses insulating the actually temp of the coolant? Shoot the inlet and outlet of the radiator hoses. I dont know what the drop should be exactly. I have 18 degrees across mine.
The outlet is around 180-185. The inlet at the top ofe the radiator was at 155-160. The only place that ever rose to near the guage reading was the intake manifold right around the temp sensor.
I had the same problem. Tried 2 different sending units and both read 15 to 20 degrees too high. Finally took the advice of several members and tried the Wells Tu5 (I think thats the right number) sending unit. Solved the problem. Now temp gauge reads about the same as IR gun. Got it at Auto Zone, about 6 bucks.
