Default Custom Wheels

We have all seen Vettes with Cragar S/S wheels right?

I have Weld Drag Lites on my '63 Vette and I want to put some Cragar S/S wheels on it. The problem I am having is I am trying to match what I have on the car now and I can't seem to do it.

I have a 7 on the front with 3.250" backspace, and,
I have a 8 on the back with 3.375" backspace

Summit Racing called Cragar and the minimum backspace they can do is 3.875" for the 7" and 4" for the 8". The one measurement that is critical is the rear one. I don't have any room to go any closer to my mono-leaf then it is at this point. If I use a .50" spacer, it will make the 8" wheel have 3.50" backspace and that should be fine.

Is this the way people get the Cragars to fit? I want to order these things soon because my front tires are bad.

Not sure about the backspacing but I have the Craiger S/S 15X7" with 1/2" spacers but the spacers are used to clear the calipers. Without spacers you can't clear them.

I've got 15x7 Cragar S/S with 3" backspace. Spacers are 3/8" rear and 1/2" front.

Did you need to put in longer wheel studs in order to use the .5" spacers?
Thanks

Can someone tell me if I need longer wheel studs to use wheels with a .5" spacer? Thanks.

The nut has to go on the stud at least as far as the stud is wide. 1/2" stud 1/2" of thread.

Are wheel studs the same as lug nuts? If so, then yes my wheels have longer lug nuts.

A stud is a "lug", & a "lugnut" is a nut that goes on the lug (or stud). Same thing only different terminology.

If you use a spacer, just be sure to get "long shank" lug nuts. Get one that will engage as many threads as possible without 'bottoming'.

I am surprised that 15x7 with 3" back space and even a 3/8 spacer (net 2 5/8" BS) gives enough fender clearance without trimming the fender lip? I'd have expected net back space numbers around 3.75 to 4 for 15x7?

Finally, with drum brakes on your 63 you shouldn't need a spacer...

1/2" spacers are a BAD idea - enormously increases the bending load on the studs under acceleration and braking.

John is there any alternative to spacers or is it inevitable when you use non-stock or different wheels such as the Cragars? I did switch to the long shank lug nuts.
