461 Date Stamp
I have a pair of 461x heads that are date stamped d203. When I go to an online calendar for 1963, the 20th is a Saturday. Am I reading the date code wrong or did they work on Saturdays back then?

Foundries commonly ran regular six-day schedules; the melt cupolas were never shut down except for refractory re-lining once a year or so. There was no attempt made to "match" casting dates - nobody paid any attention to casting dates at all at 300 engines per hour; the only thing that mattered was the casting NUMBER. If the heads on an engine wound up with the same casting date, it would be the exception rather than the rule.
