what is the best way to prep the engine for paint? would a brush on paint provide a more durable finish than spray? recommendations for paint...
most tend to peel, chip and crack....
thanks, how did you prep the block?..Is is necessary to get to bare metal? I have some peeling now. chemical or wire wheel?
I painted the blocks from both my '65 and the '78.
The '65 motor was still in the car so I just cleaned it best I could with simple green, brushes, and than wiped it down completely with Prep Sol .
On the '78 I had the entire block out of the car so it was much easier. I used a good paint stripper and wire brushes to stip the old paint off the block. Also, carb cleaner works well to get paint off and I used that in places the stripper didn't get it off. Than I again used a prepaint cleaner to make sure the black was clean and free off all residue from the stripper and carb cleaner.
The paint I used only recommended primming the steel oil pan, not the block. They claim the paint sticks better to the bare iron block. I primed the oil pan and than used 3 to 4 coats of paint on the block. It came out great!
On both motors I used paint from Bill Hirsh automotive. On the '65 motor that was still in the car I painted it by hand by brush. On the '78 motor out of the car I used the paint in the spray cans. It was much easier by spray can although even by brush on it came out very nice as this paint dries down well without leaving any brush stroke marks.
