unless there is a reason you need to use those rivets, i suggest just using pop rivets.
otherwise, a ball peen hammer and a chunk of steel to back the rivet up will work.

Yes, you can do that.
On my 56, I used 1/4in bolts/nuts instead of rivets.
Also, you can rent a special tool from the major vendors (Corvette Central, Paragon, etc) which will correctly fold over the ends of the rivet as was done by the factory. I've done this on customers' cars and its kind of awkward getting in there with the axle housing in place. So, if you have the axle housing out of the car, NOW is the time to do it.
Recent posts on NCRS tech show a farm tool rivet press that come available on Ebay for reasonable price if you wish to purchase a rivet tool that work on rebound straps. The hammer and steel method is awkward even with body off....
