I replaced my Voltage Regulator (VR103T) and my Ballast Resistor (GCR27). When I cranked the car (1965), after about 15 seconds of running the resistor starts smoking! I have a Pertronix kit in the stock distributer and a MSD Blaster 2 coil. There is two (2) wires going to the positive (+) side of the coil, one of them goes to Ballast. On the other end of the Ballast there is two (2) wires, one going to the red wire that goes in the distributor and another one I think goes to the switch (I took this one of and the car would not keep running). There is a black wire comming from the distributer (Pertronix) and goes to the negitive (-) side of the coil. Any ideas why this thing is smoking? I am going out and try to move the switch wire to the other side of the ballast and see what happens.
Just a thought here,,,
They do get hot
Did you by chance spray any WD-40 or spray paint around the resistor??
Mine smoked a bit after I wiped things down with a cloth that had WD-40 on it..
It scared the hell out of me when I started the engine
I quickly figured it out and just as quickly it stopped smoking..
Being a new resistor, who knows what they may have put on it to preserve it's looks
I didn't do any painting or any wiping down, good thought though, the smoke is comming from the back side of the resistor. I went to work on it some more because things like this drives me nuts, and my wife gave me the "Death Look" because she just got our baby to sleep. The side pipes rattle the walls, so I will return to it in the morning.
I fixed it this morning, the problem was that I had the switch wire on one end and the coil wire on the other. I put the switch/coil wire on one end and the distributor wire on the other, all is well.
