Default Light switch removal

I have a '57 and am trying to figure out how to remove the main light switch. I assume the **** and shaft need to come out first. Then the removal of the chrome dash nut in (front of the ****) allows for the switch body removal. Something from my past tells me to push in the little button on the underside of the light switch to release the shaft. So far this has not proved successful to get the ****/shaft to release. I'm sure it is a simple trick to do this but looking for pointers.
Thanks

you are correct, there is a trick to it however...I think you have to pull it out (lights on position) then press the little button while gently pulling the ****....you can feel as it releases, sometimes you have to work it a bit in and out....been a while since I have done this....so others may have better method.....I'll be doing it again real soon as my switch appears to be failing.

Thanks for the tip. It confirms that I'm on the right track. Guess I just need to spend more time working with it. I tried pushing the button in and pulling the shaft out but the button seemed to catch the shaft. I then pulled the switch all the way out and pushed in the button. I could feel the shaft against the button but couldn't get it to release.

No, that's pretty much it. I have always reached up under the dash, pushed the button all the way in and then pulled the **** out of the switch. Sometimes you may have to give a slight wiggle to the switch and button but they usually are not too difficult to remove.

You just have to work with it a little bit. Varying degress of pressure on the button while you pull out the ****.

Thanks for the additional tips. One question, do you push the button in before pulling out the ****, or pull the **** out all the way before pushing in the button (to release the ****/shaft)? Also, does the **** have to be rotated a certain way for the release mechanism to work?
thanks

IIRC, Pull **** out all the way normally, release tension on the ****, depress button on the body off the switch, pull **** and shaft out from switch.
