K&N air filter for a 63-67?
Is there a K&N air filter for a 63-67? My aunt has been greatly impressed with the one in her Trans Am and is getting on for my 74. She wants one for her 64. Do they make on for a 64 and where can I get it? Thanks, Matt

I had one a few years ago in our 66. I don't recall the part number but anyone who sells them should have the cross reference.

68350hp,
II've got a K&N on my '5. I knew there was a reason to keep the box. Here is the #: CL E - 1650. The air cleaner measures 14"x3". Bought it at Murrays.
My carb is a factory Holley 600 cfm, vac secondary.
Hope this helps
Regards,
Jim

With "68350hp" are you sure you need the extra power of a K&N filter?
Just kidding, have used several trough the yrs and have not been disapointed. (Have not put one on this vette yet), Great Xmas idea.
Thanks

The 250 & 300 hp engines used smaller filters than the 350/365 engines and, if it's using a stock air cleaner assembly, finding the right size in a K&N might be more difficult. The 14" X 3" filter is pretty much an industry standard size for open element cleaners but won't fit that application. You might contact K&N to see if they have one that will fit. I suspect that the restriction of a snorkle type housing would negate any airflow benefit anyway.

K&N makes an air cleaner "lid" that lets in even more air...got 'em on their website.  :chevy

Hey guys,
I hate to disappoint all of you K&N believers (I used to be one), but unless you have a really dirty air filter, a K&N isn't going to make much of a difference. I always wondered how much of a difference air filters made, so I ran my car on the dyo to find out. With a tiny little cheap air filter my car made 305 hp. With no air filter at all it made 307 hp. I guess with a K&N it might have made at most 1 hp over my crummy, undersized airfilter.
Unless you are running a really high HP motor that really needs to breathe, the K&N probably isn't going to make a difference IMHO.

But the advertisements say that it's worth 10 - 20 hp
By the way, I spent my money on one. :jester
I'll add it to the reciept $ pile that doesn't get tracked.

Well, gee, if they say so then it must be true, and damac's dyno test must be a fraud. ;)

I belong to another list where someone did some testing on the K & N filter. Yes, it did make marginally more HP. But the only way an air filter is to make more HP is to let more air in by being less restrictive. OK, so it's less restrictive. Sure, it does that by not filtering as well. The test did show more dirt downstream from the filter. C'mon guys, it's an oil bath filter. Car manufacturers gave up on those a long time ago.

K & N claims their filters pass the SAE J726 filtration test, which all the OEMs use, and a new one probably does.
The key to this filter's performance is the oil. It will dry out over time and as it dries out the filter will allow more dirt to pass, so the key is to keep it oiled.
As far as washability is concerned there is no way you are going to wash out and rinse away all the sub -20 micron particles. Whenever someone talks about washing a K & N, I ask them if they would consider washing an oil filter and re-installing it. It's the same basic philosophy.
Then you have to ask yourself: Is it worth my time to get a bucket of solvent, buy a can of overpriced K & N filter oil, and spend a half hour making a mess attempting to wash the filter, when for less than ten bucks you can buy a quality paper filter and just replace it every 15 to 30K miles and be assured that you won't be doing a dirt hone job on your cylinder walls.
If you really want to spend your hard earned money on this overpriced snake oil, keep it oiled, and when it comes time to "wash" it just throw it away and get a real air filter.
