Default Glovebox install question...

I've done this several times but wondering how others do it...

Do you typically install the glove box as a unit (ie with the door already attached) or can it be done in two steps first the frame, box and hinge, then install the door later?

I ask because I am having to install and reinstall to correct some fitment issues and don't want the door in the way, but once I get it right I'd like to install the door on the hinge with everything else in place.

TIA
Darren

That way you don't have to fool with realigning the door catch. Just pull the four screws holding the assembly into the z-bar, along with the screws around the perimeter of the glovebox opening. The last time I pulled mine I also clipped the glovebox light wire just outside the glovebox and put a quick-connect bullet connector inline so I don't have to pull the bulb and wire from the glovebox light socket inside to remove the glovebox. Also makes a handy place to wire in your aftermarket radio station preset wire (the one that has to have power when the ignition is off) so you don't lose stations, in case you have an aftermarket sound system as I do.

Not sure you can pull the glovebox this way on a '63, back when I had one it seems I had to pull the door from the frame, but that's been 40 years ago and I can't say for sure.

Meh...I always have installed the box first and the door later. Too much junk to hang onto for me.

I like the idea of the bullet connector for the light wire, I'm going to do that next time!

I've always pulled mine as a unit....that way you don't have to worry about the spring tension on the door either.

There's a stapled seam in the cardboard glovebox material right above and behind the latch mechanism. Be careful not to catch a corner of that seam on the way out!

Be sure to put the male end of the bullet connector on the wire going to the bulb, the female end on the wire coming from the power source!! (Prevents accidental shorts!)

Something you might want to think about.
I applied a product called dum-dum between the glove box frame and the mounting point. I did this to insure no squeaks or rattles and so for so good, no problems.
