i have built a few solid axle cars over the past 10 years and while under the dash of the latest one , a 59 it seems that the framework under the dash , door pillars, and reinforcements are made of allumium ,when did they start or stop using it ,the last car i crawled under the dash was my 61 and i sanded and repainted all the frame work with por15 so it wouldn;t rust ,i did it with the nose and dash off, i never checked it for metal content i guess thats why it was in really good shape for being left in a field for 20/30 years
Mine be rusted steel or very sharp pieces of poop or nothing at all where i vacuumed it out. My horizontals are gone on both sides on the bottom.
I am lucky enough to have a full aluminum piece that i plan to use as a template to make some new pieces. I am surprised they used aluminum first and then changed to steel.
When i bought my car, there was standing water in the pockets from being kept outside for years.

The person who is doing my bodywork fabricated template plates for one side. I am sure he could use the same template to make another set.

It's late in this thread to comment but I've learned over the years that Chev. started adding undercowl-door pillar and door supports made of aluminum during mid-57 prod. because of sagging doors and cowl areas. Sometime early in '58 they switched to steel, which was continued through 62. Aluminum supports in a 60's vintage car, I can't explain. Maybe switched in sometime during history of car.
