Default alternator belt question

I have a '65 327/350hp with no A/C or power steering. Do I use one belt to drive the water pump and alternator? The crank and water pump pulley's have two grooves. Thanks!

Second groove is for a second belt between the crank, water pump, and idler pulley.

if you select the correct length belt for the second grooves, you don't need an idler pulley...

Run a captured (water pump) belt like the 427's in Black_Magic 's illustration.

You can measure for the belt by cutting an old belt and wrapping it around the two pulleys. Be shure the belt cross section fits the pulley groove correctly. Measure the length and then go shopping at your FLAPS.

This may be a really stupid question, but if I do this, how do install the belt? I assume I'd remove the crank pulley and reinstall with the belt?

A Dayco Top Cog 15350 belt fits in the second groove (no idler) of my HiPo SB pulley set.

Loosen and tip the water pump pulley. You do not need the belt to be banjo string tight. We ran our circle track (hobby stock) car that way.

AZDoug: You have a section spec. and length for the Dayco 15350?

I also don't have P/S on my '66 small block. I ran a water pump-crank belt without an idler pulley for awhile. But it shredded itself after not very long for some reason. That scared me, so I never replaced it.

At the risk of spoiling the party, why not just leave it like Chevrolet sold it? With one belt?

FWIW, you can buy a double groove pulley for your alternator and use the aft grooves on the pump and crank.

I think the first two numbers are the width in 32nds and the last three are length in inches.
15350=
15/32" wide, 35.0" long.

Well, I run the deep groove HiPo pulleys to keep from throwing belts at very high RPM shifts, and the deep groove pulleys only come as a dual groove set, so i use the second captured belt because the motor looks stupid with dual groove pulleys and only one belt.

I checked with the NCRS website and it did come with two belts (despite what the above digram shows), hence the idler pulley and wide alternator pulley to extend the belt towards the 1st groove. After reading these responses I think I'll eliminate the idler pulley...thanks!

The NCRS?

Some 327/350's came with an idler and two belts and some came with no idler and one belt. The 250 and 300 horsepower engine came with one belt and used the same double groove pulley design as in the above diagram for all single belt ingines in '65.

PS. I just read your post "over there". You neglected to tell anyone "over here" that your engine had an idler pulley on it. In that case, it had two belts.
