Doesn't matter - all Corvette balancers through the late 70's are exactly the same in that respect; passenger car balancers are not - they changed in 1969.
OK, I went and pulled out every balancer that I have, only one is a pre-69. As close as I can check with a good straight edge, the timing mark is exactly in line with the keyway.
Sorry, I'm not going to pull off the hi-po finned balancer that's on the 56!
8" Torsional Damper
This damper was originally used on high-performance 302 and 327ci small-blocks produced from 1962-68. Its cast iron inertia ring is 11 1/16" wide. Damper ID #7173. The timing mark is 2º before keyway center line. Small Image Technical Notes: This damper has the pre-1969 timing mark location. Do not use with chromed timing pointer P/N 12342011 unless TDC mark is adjusted.
This part does not have the internal fins as the original may have had.
Is there ANY chance you could possibly be wrong or is GM ?
Thanks for your patience with me on this......

Their description is incorrect, the GM drawing is correct. GMPartsDirect.com isn't "GM", by the way - it's Flow Chevrolet (a dealer) in North or South Carolina.
