I had mine painted about 2 years ago. I stripped it and took every thing off. A friend of mine did the body work (very little), primed and blocked, sprayed it with dupont chroma single stage and sanded and buffed it out. It really turned out nice. Total $2000 Of coarse I got a buddy discount.

It's obvious that taking your Vette to another part of the country will save lots of dough, maybe even $10K. I'd have to consider this option if my 67 needed paint. I've prepped and painted my own twice and it is a LOT of work, but it's not $15 worth of work. FWIW labor rates at local car dealers are $135/hour

Louie,
You've touched on a key point. Bodyshop (not mechanical) rates here are $48.00/hour.

If I had to pay 10-15K for paint jobs I'd have to give up my hobby.

Problem with my '64 was that prior to paint it never got driven because it was an embarassment to drive and my wife didn't like being seen in it! Sure it had all new mechanicals, suspension, brakes, etc. But looked like sh--!

The car had been repaired/repainted originally saddle to red to saddle several times before I got it 25 years ago. Big pieces of the paint had pulled off of the rear (started as small bubbles) and the primer showed through.

The windshield was so pitted you couldn't see out of it when the sun was low and the side windows/wings were all scratched up. Only a few stratches on the rear but it got replaced too.

Rear carpet was torn up from when half shaft came into the car shifting into 3rd at the strip.

Rear bumper was in need of replacement, etc., etc., etc.

But it was/is sound and quick and when I did drive it, I never worried about it. Now with $30K in paint, interior, chrome, glass, etc., I worry about it.

I did make one major concession to more driving and that was the installation of the TKO600 (about $5K).

We still drive it just as much, and Linda says don't worry about the paint. But now I do worry about it and am not so apt to break the tires loose.

I know what you mean. I once had a black 63 fuelie coupe that I bought as a custom and made so nice-stock that I decided to sell it, because it was to nice for me to own! Something with little patina on it makes a better driver.
