Default 427 value

Hello all, this is my first posting in this forum and I wonder if you guys could help me out a bit. My buddys cousin has a 67 vette big block shortblock that hes willing to sell to me but Im not sure what a fair offer to make on it is. Its a short deck 4-bolt 427 casting #3904351. He mentioned that he thought it might be a l-88, is there any way to tell? Thanks in advance.

Show a picture of the stamp pad ....... lots of people are always looking to find out how to make their 427 become an L88.

Basically a 351 block in good shape is worth in the neighborhood of 5 grand by itself....... check the casting date written upside down on the passenger side........ that will help let someone know if it will work for their needs

Then you might want to list it over on the C-2 parts forum rather than here.

What is stamped on the pad on the passenger side front of the block? The info stamped there will determine what the block originally came on. If there is nothing stamped there, the block was probably decked. In that case, there is no way to verify what it originally was and probably has the 5k or so value already quoted.

Also, look at the area above the oil filter boss. A factory 4 bolt block should have 2 drilled and tapped holes containing a 1/2" and a 3/4" NPT plug. A factory 4 bolt block will also have a notch in the deck surface on the perimeter of each bore. This notch unshrouds the intake valve.

I would love to see a few pictures of the block, especially the stamp pad.

Everyone who has ever had an "unidentified for certain what it was" 4 bolt 427 in the years that the L88 was produced have hoped for the long shot of it being a genuine L88 (especially a 67). I know that from experience but like the others and most likely yours too mine was just another Hi Perf 427.

However there are both current and past owners of them hanging out here that rightfully protect the real thing as well as they can from the proliferation of clones....... and they will do the same for you should you turn out to have a real one.

That being said I think you will understand that it would be better if you first come forward with your pad info and should you have the real thing I am sure they will welcome you with open arms.

Okay guys, got down there today. The date code looks to be f 17 6. The stamp area has nothing on it so I assume it has been decked although hes going to try to clean the area better to see if theres anything remaining from the stamping(not likely). The bore is around 4.30 but is a little rusty so thats an approximate measurement. It has the notches on the top of the bore and both NPT holes above the oil filter boss. I took some pics but couldnt figure out how to post them. Thanks for all the help.

That's a real early 67 block, way too early for an L-88. It's still worth a few bucks though, they regularly sell for around 5K on ebabe, sometimes more.

Final value depends on the extent of the rust but $5000 for a bore of up to 60 over without sleeves is correct.

BTW your block and mine are within one day of each other (hard to tell whether mine is 16 or 18)

You can use it on any rect port BB in either late 66 or a 67 made in 66...... now you just need the rest of the car

good luck
