Default Overheating

Ok need some help.

Just got the Tstat replaced and it was running fine. Last night took ol girl out and it started over heating and then when I stop I saw antifreeze on the passenger side pass the door leaking on the ground.

I looked under the hood and could not see where it was coming from. Anyone have any ideas.

it is a 61 carb...283 eng.

RH side leak near the RH door would be a heater hose leak or a heater leak

The heater core is on the passenger side.

Assuming your car has a heater, check the 2 hoses going into the heater core above the battery, see if they are leaking. A heater core failure would leak into your interior, not on the ground.

What's your definition of overheating? If it is simply based on where the needle was on the gauge, you could have a bad temp sender.

It could also be that the shop that replaced your tstat put to much water in or there is/was an air bubble in the system. It will be important to know if you were actually overheating or simply pushing some fluid. Dave

If your Vette has the optional deluxe heater then check for the core leaking as another post {Jeff} sugggested as you may just be low in coolant. If so, merely loosen the pressure cap to the first notch after refilling the system. This will get you most anywhere in an emergency.

Don't discount freeze plugs - they do go out sometimes...

Well I found out it was the heater core...As i was driving it to the shop to get looked at. it over heated again and antifreeze was all over the passenger side floor board. I felt my stomach cringe....looking at the floor board when i got there it was puddled up on the floor in the passenger side. Guess they will have to pull out the carpet and clean them all up and detail it. along with fix the heater core!

Might as well plan on new carpet. Anti-freeze is amost impossible to get completely out.

There's a heater control valve that is separate from the heater core, but connected to it via hoses.

If they have to pull all that out to fix a bad core, consider replacing the heater control valve too if it looks iffy.

See e-bay linky (not mine) for picture of valve

I was under my dash twice in a month 20 years ago replacing pasrts and cleaning up antifreeze because the valve failed about 2 weeks after I replaced the core.

By refilling the system with coolant and then leaving the pressure cap tightly screwed down the fluid got forced out of the core on to your carpet. You could have left the cap at the first notch thus eliminating the pressure and therefore no antifreeze would have been pushed out of the core. It would not have overheated the engine either. Too late now, let hope no further damage.
