I have a 396 engine with a Howard Cam installed that has a performance type hydraulic lifter that apparently requires it to be set at ZERO pre-load. I have had the hardest time getting the valves adjusted, as it seems like when I adjust the valves to Zero preload the engine will have some popping in the exhaust like I have a tight valve but when I back off the adjustment the popping will decrease. Has anyone had similar experience with this type of lifters or have any recommendations.

Does this mean you tighten the preload or add lash?? Can you please verify what "back off" means?
Running zero lash on a hydraulic lifter is a race thing to do in an attempt to gain a few more RPMs. If this is truly a hydraulic lifter cam, I would just adjust it to 1/2 turn of preload.
