A friend of mine(not computer litterate) has asked me to help him. He has a 63 vert 340hp and recently installed Allens sidepipes (2-1/2")and they are way louder than he likes. Do any of you folks have experience with these and how he can quiet them down? Are there inserts he can put in them to quiet them down or are there any other solutions?
Thanks
Tim

That's just the nature of sidepipes.
You can quiet them down to the point that the car won't be perceived as loud by others. However, locate the exhaust outlet of an internal combustion engine within 3 feet of your ear and you are going to hear it no matter what.
The first time i drove my mid-year i thought the sidepipes were way cool. By the end of the first week i knew they had to go before i became deaf. It was just painful to cruise with that obnoxious noise droning im my ear. IMHO you have to be partially deaf getting worse to really enjoy them.
Thanks for the responses so far - the Allens pipes seem considerably louder than the factory pipes I have heard - he was hoping someone knew of an insert or other small muffler that could be installed in them or ahead of them to make them sound a little closer to the factory pipes in terms of volume. Thanks

I think his best option would be to call Mike Allen and maybe Mike would cut him a deal on an exchange for original type pipes of 1 3/4" in diameter OR Mike could maybe add a small resonator inline. I recall him mentioning doing something like that for a 500 inch Lingenfelter car with 2 1/2" pipes when I bought mine. Said if they were too loud we could discuss something like that at a later time.
There was a very long post about 3 or 4 months ago by "MasterDave" (sp) where he invented a mufflering type insert into the sidepipes and shared the design and results.
If I find it I'll post the link. Maybe others recall that discussion in more detail.
A friend of mine had a set of 8 inch converters made and installed before the second bend, It helped a lot.
I installed a Classic Chevy 5 speed in my 65 (stock side pipes) so when I go on highway trips and get in 5th gear I can run at 80 mph at 2000 rpm, my pipes are very quiet on the highway.
You can also buy an MP3 player, use the ear plugs, listen to your tunes, it helps as well.
