Default Diff rebuild-WHO?

What's everyone's take on rebuilding a '64 pig? Who does it? Who's the best? Who to stay away from?

All help appreciated!

Go find your local speed shop or real local parts store (not a Pep Boys-Auto Zone-etc chain). Ask for a few recommendations.

Setting up the diff in a Corvette rear isn't any more difficult than any other. And it beats shipping it to wherever and back.

I'd tell you it's E. Dean Davis in Moline IL, but you didn't fill out your profile so I don't know where you are (shipping is expensive). Your avatar suggest your a neighbor, since the cats wander through my snowy yard to drink out of the heated water dish.

Dean rebuilt the pumpin in my 66 and both of my spare 3.08:1 diffs.

Its my understanding that none of the rebuilders will accept a 63-64 punkin for trade in cause they are such weak units
Anyway I would go with a later unit??????
Even to the point of restamping it.

I'm sure there are some out there, BUT you will be hard pressed to find someone BETTER, MORE THOROUGH and DEDICATED to the restoration of Corvette gearboxes as Gary Ramadei! Gary flat out knows his stuff. I didn't know him until I needed a steering gearbox rebuilt on my 67 last month. I searched the CF and Gary's name popped up. He had been referred by several Forum members so I had him do my gearbox. Gary sent pictures of the box at EVERY step of the way. He will give you a quote BEFORE he starts the work. He calls you if he has to put anything else in that he had not discussed with you before hand. He can put whatever type of finish you want on it. If you are going for NCRS and want it bare, he'll do it. If you want it powdercoated, he'll do it. As I mentioned he sends pictures of every step. I probably received 20 pictures of what he did. Do a search on the forum for Gary Ramadei and check him out. If every other Corvette restoror did the quality of work Gary does we would all be driving Top Flight Corvettes!

If you go the shipping route, I would HIGHLY recommend Bairs in PA. They are great to work with, very professional, and quick to turn around your parts. They did mine in my 67, along with my trailing arms, and had all 3 parts back to me within 7 days. Excellent work, and detailed everything to perfection. They will even ship you the container first to package yours up to ship to them. The downside is the shipping cost, of course. But thats it.

Here is their website: www.bairs.com

Here was my stuff before, once it came out of the car:

This is what it all looked like when it came back.

Ask for Brian if you give them a call.

Good luck,
Rob Harper

Everything mechanical that I didn't want to mess with rebuilding myself went to Bairs and they were great and reasonable.

Sorry, guys. I forgot my profile. I live in northern Nevada near Lake Tahoe. There aren't a whole lot of people in this area to feed off of, so here I am with hat in hand.

My son and I are just beginning a resto/mod of a '64 that spent the last 25 years in a California garage. In fact, it hadn't even been registered since 1983. The sad part is the the original owner was going to convert it to a road racer, but the good part is he didn't get too far. All he did was pull the engine and sell it, then disappeared, leaving the car with his ex-wife. I am not going the numbers matching route as this was a 250hp 327 car and I want some thing that will at least have more ***** than my C5, so it will end up with a 383 that I'm having built for the occasion.

Thanks for all your help.

Dave,
Now that I know you're (sort of) local -- if you get down to the Bay Area, consider having Dave Herlinger in Mt. View redo your diff. He is tops locally with gears and is the only guy who lots of us would even consider for a tranny or diff rebuild. Here's a link:
http://www.corvetterepair.org/

Otherwise, I've heard for years that Bair's is a really good place.

Thanks, Louie. I'll check it out. Certainly better than sending it all the way to the east coast.
