GARDINER -- Maine State Police stopped two vehicles for speeding Friday after clocking the vehicles' speeds at 134 mph.
Troopers stopped the two vehicles -- a 2008 Mercedes sport utility vehicle and a 2008 Volkswagen GTI -- north of Cobbossee Stream and summonsed the drivers for criminal speed.
The two drivers, male students at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., were driving to Sugarloaf. The students will have to return for a court date in the coming months, police said.
I grew up in this town. The road is a winding country road.
I don't believe either one of those cars (in stock form) can go 134mph. That's damn fast!
Crazy kids.
There are only two kinds of people,
Young and Dumb
Old and Stupid
Being a kid has nothing to do with it. Given the opertunity Old people love to relive the past and will do the same stupid things they did as kids.
My little 2006 VW Jette DSG 6 speed 120CI Diesel with fuel adding only tuner box, no added boost, will do 136 MPH and maybe a little more. 136 was the max recorded GSP speed when AMG Meced pissed me off when I pasted him and he passed me back. I cruised with him at 136 MPH and he was shocked to say the least.
PS: Now how many C1/C2 Vettes are being modified by adding 400+ HP/TQ engines? Think the owners want abuse the speed limit at least once?

the only speed limit abuse my '61 will see is at Firebird Int'l on the 1/4 mile, or maybe at PIR if I get a chance.
Even though the car has the HP and motor RPM for 170 MPH, I won't go over 85, and usually keep it at 75-80 max.
I did 120+ in my car once, 32 years ago on a deserted interstate in MT, once was enough, fortunately, the inertia of the car overcame the mediocre handling of the worn out front suspension

Doug
Doug,
The little VW has a curb weights 3265 LBs. Can't explain how well it holds the road at 136 but doesn't feel light and driving at 70-90 MPH in wind it doesn't get pushed around much.
My 66 and other mid year covette I owned back when new are/were no where near as stable. The front end wants to lift bad at speeds over 110 MPH. Then add the to that suspension and steering of them.
I'm hoping new frame with coil over suspension will make it handle better, but I'm betting the front end lift problem will still be there. Let you know later on. Hoping to get thru the 1/4 mile at at 125 ++ MPH in 11.5 seconds are less. Doubt if it will ever see 120 MPH on highway unless it's a lot more stable than I think it will be.

I grew up in the town next to Wellesley, Ma. Lots of spoiled rich kids over there at Babson. I'm sure daddy bought both vehicles for the two race car drivers. Lots of bad accidents over the years on the curvy roads around Babson College. More money than brains.
