Default Soft Lifter

One of my hydraulic lifters is so soft it can easily be compressed with finger pressure on the rocker arm. If I replace the lifter with a new one, can I use it with the old push rod and rocker arm or should I get new ones.

Thanks, Steve

considering that you have to take off the intake manifold to replace one lifter, you might as well replace them all... and when you do pull the lifters, look at the wear pattern on each lifter to see if you might have a cam going bad.

as to re-using the pushrods & rockers; you'll have to inspect them carefully for wear. again, you might as well replace them all if you replace all the lifters. it's not that expensive..

Well, the real test is, does it make noise when the engine is running? If it doesn't, don't mess with it. If it clicks, you have to make a choice. Follow Bill's advice on inspecting the cam/lifters interface surfaces for excessive or unusual wear patterns. I personally would not put a new lifter on a WELL USED cam. Period.

If the rocker end of the push rod has the oil hole inlarged or chips of metal missing, replace it. If the rocker push rod seat is galled or burnt, replace the rocker and push rod. If the rocker squeaks when the engine is running, replace with a new ball/rocker.
