Default '58 Trunk spears

Good evening all,
For the fellow '58 owners out there - what experience have you had with the various reproduction trunk spears. I tried a pair of the aluminum ones off ebay. Even with a number of hours of careful filing, heating/bending and sanding can't get them to fit up very well - they just don't match the curvature of the trunk. I have seen the ad in Driveline for International Axle who says they make correct ones, I've tried emailing them and never heard back. I hear they are expensive enough to rival originals. Anybody tried theirs? Thanks for the help,

If you look at Mary Jo in California she advertises a set for $739 that will fit very well. It sounds like she has a vendor who is making them and they are being reproduced and she is happy with them.

Please keep us up to date with what you learn.

I have heard a friend of mine mention that he has a set of originals that are pretty nice with only some "minor" rust pitting on them. They must not be good enough to run them as they are and will need to be re-chromed. If I remember correctly he said that he would sell them for $1000. If you are interested I will be glad to contact him and see if they are still available. I have a 58 that came with very nice original trunk spears so I don't need any but I have seen them at the shows go for a lot more than that and were in worse condition. Let me know if you have any interest.

If you are looking for originals I can check with a guy that I see once in a while that has a collection of stuff if you know what I mean. By stuff I mean he has a mix of this that and everything tucked everywhere.
I know he had some orginals that were rough in the sense that they needed to be rechromed for sure. Not sure what sides he had or how many but they would fit well if that is a concern and if I recall they were in good physical condition other then the chrome looking tired. I remember him selling a pair that the chrome was probably a 5 on a scale of 1-10 for $600 about a year ago. If you want I can check with him to see what he has and what price he is looking for regarding prices. It might be a week or two before I can drive out his way. Let me know if you want me to ask him anything, if I can be of any assistance I will be happy to help.

Miine could stand to be rechromed, but Im scared to death to leave them at a rechromer... I'll never see them again!

Went thru this about a year ago.
I too tried the Ebay solid aluminum. They fit perfect but my chrome guy would of had too much into them.

Nice ones can go as high as $3k.

Got about $2k into mine after rechroming but they are flawless !!!

Hang in there, a set will come around right after you pay too much for some!!!

Would the '58 trunk irons fit a '59 lid?

Well, kinda.
ONLY the 58 trunk lid has the holes/depressions for the attachment of the irons.

I have had 2 1958 and neither have had anything more than holes drilled to hold the trunk spears. Holes can be drilled in any 1956-60 trunk lid to take the spears.

Gotta admit, they look mighty purty on the south end; very distinctive and unique. When I can afford a cosmetic change they'll be the first thing on my list.

I wouldn't put them on a different year car. Very very expensive addition just to make the car look incorrect.

Actually its more than drilling holes in the lid. If you look on the underside, the original 58 lid has fiberglass pieces surrounding the holes to acommodate the nut holding the stud. It allows the stud to mate to a flat surface given the curvature of the trunk lid. For originality, nothing replaces the original.

Gosh, better take the 327 out, the radial tires off, and the puller fan off, and the list goes on... no one within 30 miles out here has a C1, much less knows the difference between a 58 and a 59. I agree the spears are a pricy addition but couldn't find a 58 when I was looking for a C1. Just loooove those rails on the rear deck!
