Default Pulling the motor

Well as I have hinted at in other threads I've planned to remove the motor and tranny from my car for a few reasons.

1. I've been chasing a drive line vibration that I believe is in my Tremec 5 speed. The manufacture has been more than helpful but I still have to do the leg work to get the job done. I'm going to put the Muncie back in to determine where the actual problem is. If the vibration goes away with the Muncie it will be pretty evident where the problem is.

2. The timing chain cover that I installed two years ago during the build of this motor has a broken weld where the oil pan gasket seals to it and I'm tired of it leaking. I could do this with the motor in the car but it's so much easier with the motor out of the car.

I started yesterday and have most of the parts available, I just have to run out this morning to get a few things. I hope to be back on the road Wednesday sometime. I would have liked to repaint the inner fenders but that would require removal of a lot of additional items. I think that I'm just going to do some touch up..

So from this ...

A lot of trouble, but probably the only way to eliminate the suspected tranny. Best of luck, hope all goes well.

Yes you can. I tried once with the radiator in the car and it didn't work. Its tight even without the radiator but the support can be left in.

Yep as Brian said it can be done. With the Tremec you need to get a little more angle on the motor to get the pan over the support. I think I'm a little demented, I was able to get the shroud and radiator out in about 2 minutes now... It's all about the right angle to the dangle to get all that to occupy the same space..

Ron, I've been avoiding this for a while but as you say it's the only way to know. Thanks..

Dave,

Sounds like you are determined to figure out the reason for that vibration. I am guessing changing that alignment on the tranny bracket didn't help it at all? It will be really interesting to hear if the Muncie clears it up.

Let me know if you need a hand with anything.

Rob,

My father has my motor stand, you know the one that allows you to bolt the tranny up too. Is yours in use? Thanks.. Dave

Harps sorry to hear about the baby today. I had my dad run my stands down to my good friend Bill that was coming to see me today. He brought me my Muncie back from Chesapeake. We got the motor pulled in about 10 minutes as I had it ready to go. Then the biggest problem was to pull the balancer, replace the timing cover, rear main seal and the oil pan gasket. It was a lot of work for one day. We ended up having a little extra help with Roadking (David D) coming over to offer some help. Here are a few pics of today's activities.

We have the motor all sealed up again and the new clutch disk, throw out and pilot bushing installed. Not to bad for a few hours...

How does this rear seal go in again?/?

Do you think that I've been hammering on this flywheel for the last two years?? No major cracks but there were some pretty good marks on it..

The install of the new one-piece gasket is a breeze

Back together with the Muncie installed...

Also, the tray has an area without any mesh, as if the dipstick were meant to ride on that surface without any interferance.

David, good catching up with you yesterday during your run to the parts store. Wish I could have lend a hand too. But this week we are playing catch up for sure, being out all last week.

ANYTIME, you need a stand, just head on over to the garage and let pops know you need to borrow something. We certainly don't mind at all. I know you and I played phone tag the other night, and now I know it was probably inquiring about a stand. You're welcome to use any of them, anytime!!!

It's looking really good going back together so quickly, but I wouldn't expect anything less from "Da-Man".

Dave,

You work fast. I still think you would make a great crew chief for a Top Fuel team. How is that one piece gasket? I may use one in mine. I will try to find you and Jeff this weekend.

Dave,

You DO work fast. Glad to hear Keisler is working with you on this. This vendor appears to have come a long way from its startup venture.

I've had very good luck with that 1-piece oil pan gasket. I got kind of side tracked in my engine swap (honey do list this past week). Not going to steal your thread Dave, but your wrenching is very familiar.

I hope to be back at it tomorrow (touching up the engine compartment). Here's a snap of my mule 327 motor that'll be going in this next week.

Good luck and keep us posted on your efforts here.

Regards,

Jim

I'll have to look for the pics of the windage tray upclose. I had to cut the side of it for the lower tube. Then I had to cut the center out to get the dipstick to clear, even then I had to shorten the dipstick. No big deal as I only shortened it about a half an inch. It still has a 1" length below the full mark. Hey if it's lower than that you need to change the oil right?

Just be happy that you found this before you put the motor in the car. I didn't think about the dipstick of all things. So when I put the motor in two years ago I ended up pulling the motor one month after I installed it.. However if you read what Harps and Batchelor wrote you'd think I have the motor on zippers..

Rob sorry I could talk longer you know how it is.. I appreciate the open invitation about sharing tools... You know I have what you don't and vise versa... It's always good to know that you have that option.. You need to find some time to get out here to the new house so you know where everything is at.. You never know when you might need some tools..

The man eh? I don't know about that I seemed to be all thumbs the last time I was over at the garagemahal when I was doing m driveline measurements.. Thanks again for the use of the lift.. I can't wait to get going on my detached garage.

Crew Chief.. WOW that's top billing.. I worry some days if I could change tires on a go cart... The one piece gasket is the only way to fly.. Come see us I believe that the spot Garner got is exiting turn 2.. You need to hurry up with that BB before I decide to build me one..

Jim glad to hear that your's is going well tooo.. I'm sure that I could have spent more time on the inner fenders but I wanted to know about the vibration. Bill, David and I were turning wrenches for the last two days. I painted a few things but my car is no Concours car but we did touch up some of the things that didn't look as nice as they did.

I'm going to post a few vids tonight also.. I need to load them to my youtube account too...

I never get this pic so I made sure that I got it this time. Since I had two people helping I was able to get some extra pics today..

This is always the most stressful part.. Take a look at the expression on my face..

Just sliding in there...

Looking like a motor again...

I hate changing the speedo cable.. I eventually had to use the ole 1/4 - 20 allthread trick to get the cluster out far enough to attach the Muncie speedo cable.. I just figured you guys would appreciate this...

Warming her up to set the timing.. She fired right up so my static timing was just right..

We did have some carnage today though...
