Default Vert Hardtop

Is there a way to tell a factory hardtop from a reproduction?

What is the approximate value of each? I have been told that restored tops in perfect condition are selling between $3600 and $4500 would that be a true statement?

lastly I have also been told that the 63 through 67 are universal in fit? Is that a true statement.

Thanks

I dont think that there are any real reproduction hardtops for midyears. Look around for a used one. They should be available for 500-1000, not restored. Sometimes you can find a pretty good one. Personally, I have little use for them. The top goes down when I drive the car, and the HT has been on it only three times in 30 years. 63-67 will fit, however there are technical details that are different, so the astute will know.

The 63 hardtops had a notch near the doors however any hardtop for a midyear will fit any midyear corvette. I agree with Wayne that they can be had for 500 - 1000 unrestored. However for a restored one or one with good weatherstripping, stainless, rear glass and head liner would easily go for 3000 or more.

I bought mine for 400 but then it needed everything. The rebuild kit itself is 1100. Paint and materials another 500. Then my labor would easily be 20 hours for polishing the stainless and reassembly. So that would figure quite nicely for 3500 - 4000.. Dave

There was an aftermarket hardtop for mid-years that was sold some years ago, probably still a few around. But they're not difficult at all to distinguish from the originals, not nearly as neat, as I remember the glass fit straight into a rubber gasket that also mounted directly onto the glass hardtop. Didn't have nearly as much stainless nor look as neat as the originals.

I'm like a lot of folks, don't use mine very often, and some years never install it at all, but I'm gonna keep it, comes in handy every now and then. I especially like the security with a hardtop, much more difficult to get into the car than with the soft top.

OH, there have been several aftermarket hardtops, but I dont classify any of those as reproductions. A blind man can tell the difference.
