Went to start my car today, turned the key,car would not start and smoke starts coming out from under the hood. Thank God for the battery quick disconnect. Apparently the black/pink wire coming off the + side of the coil was shorted to the top shielding. Obviously that harness will need to be replaced, which was on my long list of things to do anyway. My question is what else might of been damaged, such as other wiring or possibly gauges. Where's the best place to buy a harness? Will the gauge cluster need to be removed? Any tips will be greatly appreciated .....Thanks,Gary

Most likely didnt damage anything else, and you could probably strip out that wire and rewire with no problem.
I have a used donor harness that I have taken connectors off of. If your damage is just limited to a small area let me know what you need and I'll accommodate you, that is if you want to go the repair route.

That thought did cross my mind. I think its the black/pink wire that goes to the starter solenoid. Its melted pretty good up by the coil. Also I found another little spot in the harness thats melted down toward the starter I knew I should of went to the beach today with my wife.

Thanks for the offer. I'm going out now to open it up to see just how much damage is done.
65 vette dude,
The same thing happened to me but I had already replaced my harness. It didn't damage anything except that black/pink wire.
FYI, I have a complete harness out of my 65 coupe that I had checked out as I was going to re install it. I decided to replace is and used a Lectric Limited which is excellent.
Well,it looks like you guys are 100% right, the damage looks like its only to the black/pink wire. So I guess for now, I will go ahead and repair it since I have a trailing arm project facing me that really can't wait. Thanks for the help guys, and Wombvette, this is the second time you have been right on with your advise to me.

35+ years of experience should account for something.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Gary.. you know these old cars.. It’s not one thing or another.. it’s several things at once!!

Thanks Joe,turned out not to be too bad, thanks to that quick battery disconnect. Hard to believe that one wire could cause all that smoke. Let me tell you,I was "steepin, and fetchin, and cussin." One things for sure,I will be much more careful how that top shielding goes on from now on, especially in the area of the coil.

Put an inline fuse on that wire if you don't want that problem again.
