I have a book which says in 1966, all vettes came standard with reverse lights. Yet I see a lot of '66 for sale which have two red lights, instead of one red and one white/clear.

Whats the deal?
You're correct about seeing them with that configuration. Two of the three '66s at B-J Palm Beach this year had all-red tail lights.
I was watching when the blue sold and never heard the commentators mention the tail lights. I thought they would because of the way they'll nitpick over other things.
BTW, I would never simply put red lenses in the back-up slot without wiring the slot for tail & brake light operation......too easy to get a ticket for a "burned out" bulb around here.
I saw a '67 in traffic a few years ago who had replaced the middle back-up light with red bulbs (lens remained white) and wired it as a third brake light. I thought this was a neat thing since everyone driving around these days are use to seeing a third brake light on cars in front of them. This trick might have already saved that guy from being hit in the rear...., who knows ?? You really couldn't see the red bulbs behind the white lens when the brake wasn't being applied but is was nightime. Maybe in the daylight it was more prevelant.
Just for the record......., I still have the white back-up lenses in my '66. I like the looks of 4 red lenses better but I'm kinda into the all original look (except for my radial tires and cell phone in the ash tray !!!)
Yep, my '66 now has four red lenses. When I got the car, the backup light switch and harness were missing from the transmission. So I wired the backup light wire to the brake light switch. Now I have two taillights and four brake lights. When I redo the exterior, I plan to get the dual filament inner lamp assemblies and have tail and brake lights.
