I need to buy a lead hammer in order to remove my knock off wheels. I understand that these hammers can be quite pricey. Does anyone know a website where I can buy a relatively inexpensive one?
LEAD! Get a big one, and beat the crap outa them.. You won't hurt them....but, if they come off, they'll hurt you. (mark the wheel and KO nut and check them often)
The "Mother Thumper" is the way to go. All you have to do is "thump" the spinner tight. No need for wild flailing and beating on the spinner. Just "thump it".
Those things aren't cheap but if you'll go to Harbor Freight or some place like that and buy a 5 pound dead blow and use that for all but the last few "thumps" when you're installing the wheels, your lead hammer will last a long time.
I don't recommend you rely on a dead blow to finish tighten the wheels, let alone a rubber mallet. The rubber mallet is just asking for trouble.

Rutland Tools has a cheap lead hammer for around $30. http://www.shoprutlandtool.com They have about four or five different weights of lead hammers. I have Model#: 23308058 | Catalog Page#:1143. 5 lbs head. Works great!
I know a fellow who uses a tool like a large socket with cutouts for the fins of the spinners. It works really well. It also keeps the spinners from getting so beaten-up looking.
I've been using a hammer since 1986 that has rawhide on one side of the head and copper on the other.
While it's starting to get a bit worn out after 22 years of hammering on the old knockoffs on my vintage Halibrands (on another car, not the Vette), it has always done the job without buggering up the knockoff ears.
I forget the price, but I recall it is of English manufacture, so I'd guess the dollar went a lot further relative to the Pound in 1986 than it does now, unfortunately.
I have not used one yet. When you use the lead or the one you bought will it leave marks in the chrome?
A lead hammer won't mark the chrome. That said, the lead hammer that came with the car has a steel head, and when the lead wears down, the edge of the steel head WILL damage the chrome. Get a "******-Thumper".
