Default '59 Windshield Post problem

A few years ago, I had my windshield post tabs repaired by Grossmueller for $99. They were plated immediately and put on a shelf. Recently, I took all the windsheild parts to the only shop in St Louis that has experience assmbling the entire windsheild unit. As the shop owner screwed the lower channel to the tab, it broke off. He called me and together, we tried screwing the lower channel to the other tab. It promptly broke off also.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? The windsheild assembly is together now but both tabs are broken. Really aggravates me.

You don't say how they were repaired, but it sounds like the old piece was welded back on and the welds did not hold. That type of repair really does not work well on the pot metal posts. The better and stronger repair is a complete new replacement tab that I believe is attached with screws after your old post is prepped. Never did one, but I have heard good things about them. The repair is on the bottom side so no need to worry about the chrome. Good luck Pilot Dan

You can send them out and have them re-repaired without worry of chrome damage. Try Paul Mazut. I am not in the office right now so I don't have Paul's contact information. Perhaps someone else can provide. Paul does good work.

Without messing up the chrome, they turn the post over...and work just on the bottom.

They machine a "keystone" like depression into the bottom of the post.

A metal piece.....shaped like a keystone on the under post area, and shaped like the real front of the WS post is then screwed into the recess using machine screws.

Ain't no way that system is breaking. Corvette Central does 'em.

Maybe others?

Chuck

Corvette Central has done the tab replacement for me on several cars. I am very pleased with the results.

I believe Grossmueller's just sends them to CC.(at least thats what they did with mine) I've had no problems. Mine had fresh chrome with no tabs too, and they came back perfect.
