Default temp question

today i took the car (1962) for a drive , it was 93 degrees

while driving the temp was fine, the temp gage was stable at 180 - 190

even at stop signs no problem

whewn i pulled into the garage i got the temp gun to verfy the temp gage is correct and the top of the thermostat housong was 190

after about 5 mins the overflow tank was overflowing , with the temp gun the engin was abot 200

the exaust manifold was 500

is this normal?

Was the car idling in the garage, or simply shut off and still overheated?

Sounds like a lack of air flow through the radiator. What engine does your 62 have? Are all of the shrouds in place? Factory fan clutch working? The high HP motors had rubber seals around the front of the radiator core support to help direct more air through the radiator.

yes the shrouds are in place,
the radiator is a new dewitts
i have a 180 thermostat

i do not know what you mean by rubber seal? there are rubber cushons between the raditor and the support

i do not have a fan clutch, the fan is connected with a standoff.

i pulled in to the garage and turned the car off . it did not run in the garage (i made that mistake once)

The overflow tank isn't what it's called, it is a surge tank that is part of a closed system, the cap will allow expanding fluid to escape, and flow to the ground. The system should not be filled when cold, but only to about 1/2 full on the surge tank, and definitely make sure the radiator shroud, and seals are in place and in good shape.

Your overflow is too full! Temp increase is normal at shut-off.

There are rubber bits glued to the front of the metal core support on the lower left and right corners (my memory is fuzzy) and I believe on the sides as well on the high HP cars. If you to www.corvettecentral.com and search for part numbers 241015 and 241016 you'll see photos of the seals.

When I shut my 62 off after running for a while (at 180 degrees), I can turn the key back on 10 minutes later and see my temp gauge up over 200. Never sure why mine does that.

But I agree with the others, your surge tank may be over-full and it simply fixed itself by burping the excess fluid out.

this is what the seals look like

i didn't use them, instead i got round foam pipe insulation and pushed it down alongside the radiator, between the radiator and the radiator support. works just as good (or better...), and a whole lot cheaper...

Don't over-fill the expansion tank - that's why it says "1/2-full cold" stamped on the end. If you keep topping it off, it will keep "puking" during hot-soak after you shut it off. When you shut it off, the engine is still pouring heat into the coolant, but it's not circulating through the radiator to cool it, so the coolant heats up and expands; if you've over-filled it, the coolant expands beyond the available space to contain it, and it "pukes" through the overflow hose.
