I just replaced my ignition switch in my 58' and now when I shut the car off, it engages the starter motor temporarily before the motor quits running. Does anyone have any idea what could be the matter? I have checked and the wires/terminals on the back of the switch aren't touching each other. Maybe a bad new switch?
Moreover, where did you get the switch and how do you know it was correct for your car. When I went looking for mine at NAPA there was page after page of switches that looked quite close to mine but they were NOT the right part...
I am not an expert but if you didn't have the problem before and you replaced the starter switch it would seem that it is defective. That switch is getting voltage to your starter. Check all the connections verify everything is OK. Greg
i had the exact same problem not long ago. the switch was fine. in my particular case, the heater feed wire from the fuse box to the heater switch was plugged into the wrong receptacle. it would backfeed the circuit and cause the starter to engage when shutting the ignition off.
i found this kind of easily because on the night before, the heater had quit working. it was dark and i was fumbling around under there to get it plugged back in. after giving it some thought i went back to that circuit and found the problem. it was the only thing that had changed at the time and it turned out to be the problem. in the light it was obvious.
i know it sounds crazy, but that's what it was. good hunting.
