I just got the parts for the heater box back from blasting and am getting ready to powdercoat them....
I have a few questions on assembly. Last time JohnZ had said from my pics that someone had put the heaterbox together backwards (heater core was strapped to the firewall as opposed to the inner box). So what is the correct sequence of steps to re assemble this thing? And what colors should the base plate and straps be (semigloss black?) or does that even matter? Thanks..
Ok I have the gasket kit for the heater box and cannot figure out what goes on when. There are 2 black foam gaskets, and one grey one. The heater core is bolted directly to the plate. Is there a black gasket between the plate/core and the inner heater box? I know one of the black ones goes between the outer firewall and the outer heater box. And does the grey on go between the assembled inner heater box and firewall? Am I supposed to trim the grey one to fit?

Mikey: I, too, was confused...
Disclaimer: I did this over a year ago. Other CFers feel free to jump in and correct me...
The gray gasket goes between the plate and the heater box.
One black gasket goes between the plate and the firewall.
The other black gasket, as you mentioned, goes between the outer firewall and the outer heater box.
So the assembly sequence from inside to out would be something like this: Inner heater box, gray gasket, plate, black gasket, firewall, black gasket, outer heater box.

I think that's it...
Dammit.. well I already F'ed that up. I put the black gasket between the plate and the inner box. Used the yellow 3M weatherstripping sealant to seal. Not sure of how to get it off now.
I did not get the gasket set with the two (2) black units. Mine came with the gray and black only. The heater core and plate simply slid on to the four (4) mounting bolts and then a couple of flat tension nuts held the plate to the box. The gray gasket went on between the heater box and the fire wall. The black gasket went on the outside air box that housed the heater fan. The two(2) little round gaskets go on after the outer box is put on and the hoses keep them in place.
That was the sequence that mine were installed. I wrote earlier on this forum about the difference between the two gasket sets and JohnZ said that if the original did not have the second black gasket I did not need it. Some had it, some did not.
If I were to guess, I would think that the second black gasket would go in under the plate that holds the heater core. The gray one should always go against the firewall, I believe.
This daigram from the 1966 AIM shows that in 1966, 2 gaskets were used ( item # 5). Item # 2 is the grey one that goes on the inner box. Perhaps someone with other year AIM,s can verify which years only used one black gasket?

Yes please.. any info on this would be appreciated. I just want to get this thing put in by today so I can move on. The light grey gasket is huge and would look under the dash unless I cut it..
What gaskets go where and do I use sealant on everyone? Is my above sequence correct?
Ok.. I think I might have the gasket thing figured out.. but are you supposed to trim it or anything?? The light grey gasket looks like with my black interior.... I mean wth. Why didn't GM just use another black gasket and use 3 instead of 2 black then pick a funky color for the 3rd?
Here is what I think it is.. is this right??
First the heater box with grey gasket:
Then I put the heater core and plate onthe grey gasket:
Then the black gasket on top of the heater core/plate the goes up against the inside firewall:
The grey gasket is a foam type material. You put it around your heater box on the inside of the car after it is bolted on to the firewall. I think it is a final seal against drafts. That foam material will lay under your carpet so you don't even see it.
