after 6 yrs i decided to check out the "original " engine that came with my '66 vert. it has a 383 strkr in it currently. heres some of the #'s ive gotten off the 327/300 engine block,heads,manifold and boby.
vin 194676S101603
body build code and # b15 A 0668
engine cast # 3858174
eng ID# on pad,looks like it was milled,just some faint marks
heads 3782461 with h265 on them
manifold cast 8872788 also H265 on it
So if anyone can help me out ,maybe i can determine if it is original or at least determine what those faint block pad markings are supposed to be .
if i made any typos its cause i just had rotator cuff surgery and im hunting pecking with my right hand ,im left handed ! aargh
Looks like car was built 9/65, its the right block casting, The Heads cast# is right & the head dates are 8/26/65. You might want to try & get the block casting date (same place but opposite side of the block from the casting#).

block date looks like a B 56 or D 56 with a small 1 above it and a round bump to the right of it . thanks for the help, how did you get the date for the heads ? learning slowly !

With regards to the cylinder heads, GM used a simple method to designate for the casting dates:
A-January
B-Feb
C-Mar
etc.
So in your case the H relates to August, 26 is the day of the month and the last number of 5 relates to the year.
The block date based on what you posted would be :
B56 = Feb 5, 1966
D56 = April 5, 1966
The casting date format is MDDY where M= month (A for Jan, B for Feb, etc) DD is day of the month & Y is the calender year.
The best sources for this info I've found are the NCRS TIM (Technical Information Manual) for the specific year and the Corvette Specifications Guide which are both available from the NCRS site store. I also use "Corvette by the Numbers" by Alan Colvin available from the same site or from Amazon.
so both feb or april for the block dont make much sense ,being 5 to 7 mths later than the rest of the engine and car . right ? I'll try to find the sources you guys mentioned.
reading the
'engine pad " post from kbuhgiar, makes me wonder if mine could be a replacement block ? looks like it was made 7mths after the rest of the car.didnt they have CE number? mt pad appears blank once i got it cleaned off .

The "CE" short block program didn't start until mid-1969, for '67-up cars with the 5/50 powertrain warranty. Most service replacement short blocks prior to that had blank pads.
