Suffix code help
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3...palargetm8.jpg
block casting number 3782870= 62-67 327(Yes on the behind the dist crank case vent and square plug above the T/C cover)
Date code on the passenger rear shoulder of the block
J172= translates to Sept 17st 1962
Deck stamp suffix code FI0I9PA
F= Flint
1019= Oct 19th
The "PA" throws me. The partial vin is stamped so light I'm not sure it can be read at all. Very faint, completely missed it's presence the first few times I looked at the suffix code. Any tips on seeing it better would be well accepted. I tried to shade it with a pencil, and then a marker...just too faint. No obvious circular broach marks so I'm not thinking the block has been decked, but it has obviously had the heads off at some time as they're mid 70s 76cc accessory hole heads along with a similar vintage 4bbl intake. Engine was found in a 76 chevy truck, guessing the heads are from it.
I really don't think the "P" is an "R"...but the hoop part of it does look rather large for a P. I scrutinized it a bit with the thought that it could be, but just keep coming back to it being a "P" for certain in my mind.
RA would equal a 1962 327 m/t, a/c - full size
I can't find a listing for a PA. Any thoughts, or info appreciated. I know it's not a pot of gold, just curious as to what it is. Hate to let it go as "just another 327" if it would happen to be one that meant something to someone. Note, no intentions of selling it for a while, the complete engine is going in one of my vehicles as a temporary set up for this summer so that I can rebuild the engine that was in it. Not a corvette.
Oh, an introduction would be the polite thing to do... Name is Doug, and I'm a Jeep enthusiast, nothing to do with Vettes other than my dad owned a couple in the past. I do admire them when I see a nice one drive by. Only reason I'm here is because the engine sparked my curiosity and I figured a group of **** (KIDDING) Vette guys would be the ones who could figure it out if anyone could.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any effort!
Doug
Oh, one last thing, I do happen to own a set of 67 vette heads that have never been bolted to an engine. Machinist Bud of mine bought them new 32 years ago and never finished his project. I bought them from him 15 years ago. Had 2.02 stainless backcut and polished valves installed, larger springs, screw in studs, guideplates, 10 degree locks...think that's it. I did have him take about .006 off the surface to insure they were square...and of course, I got married and never finished the project. No desire to go fast anymore, but do think I have an engine they would work nice on now.

All 1963 "P" suffix code motors were 292 6cyl for truck, and there is no "PA". I would suggest the possibility that the tail of the "R" was broken off that die and the code should be "RA", which is a 250hp 327 with manual transmission and air-conditioning. (passenger car).
I thought about the possibility of the die breaking off. If so, it's a nice clean break. In reality, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans...just trying to satisfy my curiosity more than anything.
I noted the manual trans when I found the listing for "RA" . Inspired me to look for evidence of a pilot bushing. I found none, but in 45 years a lot can happen. Nothing saying the crank is original, or the pilot bushing was removed long ago enough that the bronze streaks have worn/faded/rusted away. I found it in front of an auto trans.
Thanks for the Sept-Oct correction, I was even born in Sept and have ten digits to count it out on... no excuses left

Once it finishes it's temporary duty, I may play around with it some more and see if I can find a way to make out the partial Vin. I'll also be looking at the crank to see what it tells me.
Thanks for the input guys!
