I'm going to get my manifolds back on this weekend after painting. I have a heat riser on my passenger side exhaust but not on the driver side. Does that make any sense. Should you have one on each side, or non, what does it really do?
Only 1 heat riser valve, on the passanger side only. What does it do? It prevents exhaust from exiting the passanger side when engine is cold. Exhaust heat is trasnfered through planiums to drivers side. Helps the engine warm up faster. When hot, valve opens and you've got real duel exhausts. Bill.
Spell Check (Copy to a Word Doc, spell check, copy back)
If you are wanting the heat riser for a correct looking application, you can gut the valve and leave it stock appearing, but rendering it useless. Unless you plan on driving your vette in below freezing weather, then you do not need it.
In any event, make sure it is open and or working, if not you will have a hot intake, and poor running carb with boiling/percolating problems, warp an aluminum intake, and warp a Holley carb.
I just read my post to Brian above. Would someone please tell me where to find spell checker on this forum? Bill.
I use FireFox as my web browser. Starting with version 2.0.0.14, it automatically underlines mis-spelled words in forum posts, as I write them. Right-mouse-clicking on the underlined words, displays spelling suggestions.

Years ago I gutted my heat riser do to the fact they eventually get stuck as mine was on its last legs. I then brased the holes shut filling them with brass, ground it down, painted and reused mine. You can also buy a brand new gutted heat riser with no holes for the butterfly. I guess it would then be called a spacer. Either way you are better off while you have it apart.
