Default Sombrero question

I was welding reinforcements gussets at the sombrero bracket (rear cross member support) and what looks to be like melted rubber started to come out the top between the sombrero and the sombrero bracket. Since I have no idea what is inside this thing, I stopped. Does anyone knows what's inside the sombrero?!?!?!?

Thanks,

Luiz

Is the cross member still in place? If so its the rubber in the crossmember bushing. Remove the cross member and gusset away!

Yup, it sounds like you melted the sombrero bushing. This is what they look like with the crossmember removed.

I'm with Harry! Question is, what type of welding were you using? You seem to have generated a lot of heat along the way. Al W.

No, the cross member is not installed. I am working on a bare frame. The rubbery stuff is coming from inside the sombrero. I am using TIG welding to do not just that but a lot of additional reinforcements to the frame......

The only other explanation I can come up with would be that the car was undercoated at some time in its life (fairly common for dealers to do to steel cars in the day: Ziebart for example), and that the substance you are getting is old undercoating? (They had wands to shoot the material deep into the frame cavities.)

There's nothing inside the "sombrero" other than a threaded weld nut.

Harry,

I believe you have the right answer. After a bit more research and inspection, I came up with the same conclusion. John Z just confirmed it also. I will resume the welding job tomorrow. Thank you all for the help.
