How does one tell what components came with a car, like the size of the engine, horsepower, tranny, diff. ratio, stuff like that? I imagine it can be different on many cars due to the choices being options and such, but is there a way to know just by looking at trim or other numbers or would we need the window sticker for that? Thanks.
The POP (Protecto Plate) tells alot about the cars options. Here's an example of a 67 Camaro but the Vettes are very similar. Nolan Adams Restoration & Technical Guide has a section on the vette POP's.

If there are no documents with the car it is difficult.
There are things that may give hints but many are fairly easy to change and with old cars things probably have been changed over the years.
Thanks for the Protecto Plate info...I had read about those in many "for sale" ads and never knew what they were.
My car is being shipped from the seller today and will get to me sometime within two weeks. I'm trying to glean as much as I can from the trim tab, which has already told me that my Rally Red 1965 Corvette Coupe was born Tuxedo Black! It has no PS or AC. I'm thinking of at least adding AC and a right passenger side view mirror (w/o bow tie). It looks different from most in that it has a front dam and rear flares. My avatar shows the "front clip" I think they call it.
See fellas, I'm already learning the jargon and I hope to know almost everything there is to know about MidYears, especially the '65!
The side pipes are the exposed type and apparently they need either repair or replace...I'll decide when I see them. I wish I can attach pics here, but my posting rules box below says I need to be a supporting member, which I think I will become once the car gets here.

Not totally accurate.
You need to be a supporting member to Attach photos. But if you wish to post some photos on the web, and then link them in your post, it's easy:
1) Go to www.tinypic.com and upload your photo
2) On the resulting screen after the upload, you'll see a text string that starts with [IMG] Copy that string
3) Paste that string into your Corvette forum post
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have uploaded all of the photos you wish to show us
5) Submit your corvette forum post
Or, if you already have a photobucket account, put your photos there and again copy the [IMG] string from there, to your corvette forum post.

Ok, it's a 65. And it doesn't have factory A/C. So, if the battery is on the driver's side of the car, it probably was originally a big block (396 engine). If the battery is on the passenger side, it was a 327 small block.
If you feel strongly that the instrument cluster has never been out of the car, then you can look on the back of it for a sticker with a 2 digit code, like LA or LB. That code will tell us what engine combination originally was associated with that instrument cluster.
There's nothing in the serial number tag, or trim tag, to tell you what size of an engine your car originally had.
Thanks for all that info. Here's a pic of under the hood taken by the seller. I can't tell where the battery is, so I'll have to wait. I'm awed at all the ways you guys know on how to tell this and that about these cars.

The battery isn't visible on the driver side, so it must be on the passenger side. This would suggest the car was originally a small block. Be sure to post some pics when she arrives!
