I am getting ready to pull the 427 out of my 67. I will be pulling engine and trans as a unit, and will have to pull it from the side due to space issues.
Is there and advantage to removing the wheel on the side of the cherry picker? I think it might give more clearance.
Also, would it be helpful to have the entire car up on stands to allow me to tilt the unit more steeply? Or would my cherry picker run out of verticle lift and I'd be stuck?
Side pull can be done, but the motor is going to have to go forward about 24"-30" during the pull, so your cherry picker is going to have to move sideways, towards the front of the car that distance, so front wheel and jaclstands could be in the way.
Unless you pull the motor as a seperate unit and take the trans out later.
There is no problem with pulling the motor from the side. As you thought you will need to remove the wheel from that side and place a jackstand at the normal place where the frame turns. Do that on both sides but it's not necessary to place the car on all four jackstands. The angle actually helps you when you are removing / installing the motor and tranny as a unit.
That way will work, note: the lift is not designed to do that. (my opinion) I have had them flip over and that would make a mess of a nice car. Pick it up from the front, roll the car back and then move the powertrain and push the car back. This is my opinion, but I have done over 100 engine pulls and installs, I have done 6 on vettes and it is always scary due to the damage you can do with one "AAHHH SHI*"

How did they flip? What's the load difference going from the side or the front?

When you get a swing if you are front to back.. the picker does not get unstable. side to side swing , unless you have a high dollar rig with long rear stablizers it will want to tip, when it does the powertrain drops down and becomes very scary. I just dont like doing it that way..
I just installed mine Sunday after a rebuild. Mine is a 66 Big Block. I did it from the front with no problems (engine and trans.) You just need to be careful. I did not have the car on jackstands. I left the trans in and removed it later to bolt up to the engine before install. Just hook your chain up so you will have about a 20-30* angle. You do not need a load leveler (most are pcs. of junk anyway.) You do have to drop and move, drop and move, several times. Put a blanket on the nose of your car because the hoist will be close. Here it is comming out.

I think it depends on the type of lift you are using, if I see yours it has wheels up front that can rotate 360°, others have fixed wheels that can only go forward and backward (like on Jeffs photo).

Ray thanks I didn't think about those that have fixed wheels on them. Dave
