.. welcome to CF. i appoligise for my initial response, but i'm just preparing you for when you dive in to the deep end of the pool of CF which is OT. check out OT, it is funny.to your question-- i assume you have a powerglide or a TH350. check the vacuum modulator at the back-passengers side of the tranny pan. an indication that this is bad would be engine smoke from sucking tranny fluid through the modulator diaphram into the vacuum line to the engine.
next- the centrifigul counterweights in the tailhousing could be sticking due to varnish or ?? from 40 years of useage'
lastly- you could have valves in the valve body sticking due to varnish.
pull the tranny pan, drain the fluid and change the filter/tranny fluid. this might solve your problem. back in the C-2 days a tranny service was regular maintenance just like oil changes.
welcome to CF...
PS- it is not a cooling problem, changing the tranny fluid and filter is in effect flushing the tranny (you may have to do it twice)
EDIT: bare in mind, the torque converter will still be full of fluid (some TCs have a drain plug) if not this is why i say you may have to change the tranny fluid twice.
