Well its gotta be replaced - the 'on-site' quick fix windshield guy said fixing the crack was out of the question; he wouldn't even consider it.
I'm going to have Burke's Corvette in Maitland, FL replace it. The owner came out and went all over the car and really knew his way around my old C1.
However, I find I have a nice (but now cracked) LOF windshield which can't be had anymore I'm told (they sold out to somebody). What is the closest to a date code correct/period correct replacement ? Who sells them ?

Frank, I bought a date-coded windshield for my '63 from O.E.M. Glass Incorporated back in 1999 and am still very happy with it. Here's a link:
Yup - my installer just told me he is talking to OEM glass as well..so now he has two good sources - thanks folks..
The good news is that he is replacing all my cracked, messed up molding -- both around the windshield and the piece that the windshield sits on....a job I was dreading !!

i believe you mean weatherstrip....
if you can get him to replace the moldings for the price of a windshield, give me his name.....

i might reconsider OEM glass. They really stuck it to a forum member a few months back. I believe the title of his thread was "OEM Glass Sucks!" I bought a tinted windshield from PS AUTO GLASS. They specialize in classic cars. They also were the cheapest at the time. I think I paid 135 for a C2,plus 75 dollars for date coding,if you want it. Very nice people, and great service.

I remember that particular thread but every vendor, no matter the caliber, seems to tick somebody off sooner or later. I've read recent rants about Al Knoch (upholstrey), Tom Dewitt (radiators) and Bob Kunz, (the top person in the world that restores old Carter carbs) .....I usually try not to let a single instance of such things color my choice of vendors.... If a pattern develops - well then that's a different beast...

Make sure your windshield guy removes the entire windshield from the car. Actually make sure your windshield guy knows how to do a solid Axle Corvette windshield, they are in a class of their own. I learned how to fit and install because everyone in the business where I am did not know what to do. Out of all the jobs on an early Corvette it has to be the worst.

PS there is a gasket under the frame to the body you may want to replace as well.

First thing this guy did was roll under the dash on his back to see what might be in his way to get to the windshield bolts - the next thing was to order the windshield weatherstrip along WITH the frame to body weatherstrip -- all before I said anything. This guy knows what he's doing.
Well now I'm totally PO'ed. Evidently the same truck that got my windshield sprayed rocks across my front hood surround!
I don't even know if my faded Honduras Maroon can be matched and blended to repair this. I am NOT ready for a while paint job over these chips. Anybody care to offer an opinion if this can be made to look decent ?

Frank, just an observation/dumb suggestion - during a recent visit, my daughter was wearing nail polish that looked very similar to your color. I don't know how well nail polish might stick to a Vette, but it might be worth an inexpensive try to find a matching color of nail polish. You could paint it onto a piece of paper and hold it up to the car to check the match before painting in the chips. Just a thought.
My windshield guy is also a body man/painter and had an impressive shop so I'll get his advice...he said he could "...send a sample off" of my paint to get an exact match (not sure what that means)...it'll work out I'm sure.
Just a real PITA to now have to deal with these issues after finally getting out of 'engine hell' over the past months...
I just use touch up paint on my chips, it works pretty well, make sure you use a slightly darker color than your paint if you can't match exactly and they won't be as noticable as if you use a slightly lighter color.
I actually use black, as my candy paint has a black base coat and the balck fades into the paint pretty well, attempts at using darker red metallics showed up more pronounced on my paint
You are going to get rock chips if you drive your car, having the front repainted evertime you get a chip is going to get expensive, get your insurnace cancelled, or is a sign of OCD.
I've touched up a bunch of stuff already Doug (don't all vette owners have OCD?)....even chips on the front; but this one is really bad...I'll see what my windshield/body guy says...if its a big deal then I'll touch it up. I have used this little kit with great success: http://www.langka.com/complete-paint...pair-p-30.html. If you can get a close color match this setup really can make a repair d@mn near invisible.
I have been through several shades of Maroon to try to match the paint and darker actually looks pretty bad on this particular car....that's what's got me so annoyed.
