Default Problem Confusion

Had our 67 out today. A strange symptom became apparent. On acceleration in 3rd I felt a slight wobble like vibration. It seems to be somewhere in the right rear. Almost like a Tire with low A/P. Tire pressure is 32PSI. It is only noticable during acceleration. Everything is tight under the car so I'm wondering if the Posi is acting up. Opinions welcome. Al W.

Did you check to make sure that all of the trailing arm shims are there?

Or it may very well be that a u-joint is on the way out. Lift up the rear of the car and wiggle your wheels for spindle bearings, stub axles and look for rust colored power around the u joints...all 6 of them!

I'll be looking into this later today and will report back. It is a very odd type of thing. I never rule anything out until culprit is found but this car is a totally restored vehicle and everything "BUT" the Trailing Arms was refurbished. I'll be back! Al W.

Default Posi trouble

Normally you will see upcoming posi problems by noticing a bit of a chatter (no noise with it, just can feel it) when making a sharp turn from a stop. I've never felt any symtoms when traveling in a straight line.
Having said that, I did at one time feel that chatter and after sucking out some lube that looked pretty "mature" and putting new lube in with a bottle of the posi additive my slight issue went away. Might not have been changed in 40+ years.

On acceleration in 3rd I felt a slight wobble like vibration.
Al,

It's hard to venture a guess without knowing all that's been done, restored, changed, etc.....but,

Were you trying to say it's only a 3rd gear problem? Nothing in the other gears? Or you just happened to notice vibration like symptom in 3rd gear on heavy acceleration?

"Wobble" is the key word - a wobble or squirrelly feeling from the rear suspension usually points to toe-in shims that have fallen out, which lets the front of a trailing arm move laterally on the pivot bolt.

I would get the car in the air and look it over, check for play in wheel brg's, arm, rubber parts. If you still have the original type shims they should be the double hole but if the car was done someone may have used the later slotted shims which would need the long cotter pin to hold in place. That would require drilling a hole in the frame like the 70-82's had.
If you do have play in the spindle I would look a lot closer and not drive the car.

I've examined everything on my car and can find no problems. I'm starting to eye the Snubber for the Rear end. It looks fine, fat and happy! Is anyone aware of a Neopreme Bushing for this part? Al W.

I don't see a connection between the pinion snubber and your problem?

What are you thinking?

67vetteal,

What you re experiencing could be what I experienced. I too noticed the back of my car getting squirrely under hard acceleration. Turns out the right rear trailing arm bushing was shot. I found that out by grabbing the wheel (weight of the car on the ground) at 3 o clock and 9 o clock. I was able to get a 1/4 inch of movement in/out. Further noticed when driving slow I could hear a clicking noise from that wheel.

Well, Gary Ramadie (GTR1999) has em and, as they say, nuthin money cant fix. I should get mine back this week. The right arm along with the bushing was toast...rusted out and deformed.

Got her all cleaned and painted up waiting for my parts. Here s a pic of the back of my empty Vette

Good luck!

Jim

What kind of shape are your tires in? Cound be an internal cord damage. Consider swapping F & R and see if it makes any diffeence. You said it happens in 3rd grear under accelaration.. is it related to speed or just happends under load?

Gee, this advice sounds familiar.

Joe, your advice is what I'm going to try next. This problem is Weird to say the least. The "wobble" happens under acceleration in any gear. And it seems to be getting worse! Anyway, I'll stick to it and eventually we'll find the answer. I was thinking Snub failure causing Drive Shaft misalignment. Al W. PS: John, all the shims are in place as there is a Cotter Pin with the Chassis drilled.

I'd bet my money that Joe is on the mark about the tires.
