I had a 67 small block a few years back and the car just died on me.I was able to restart and drive home but the engine was surging and misfiring all the way home at 50 mph.It was only the condenser.I think that a faulty condenser would affect the performance at all rpm levels.
I had the same problem last year on my 66 327/350 and replacing the points and condenser cured it. So, I don't know which one was bad. And speaking of the 670 Avenger, I just replaced my worn 3367 with one last week. It really runs good but was slightly lean when I first installed it. I upped the jetting 2 and that helped and I could probably go a little more. I do plan on putting my original 3367 back on once I find someone who will mill the flat surfaces for me.
Hello All, I want to thank you all for your help. It's fixed.
It turned out to be the Carburetor after all.
I did not use the Holley Street Avenger because I was told by two people that I trust, that they were not well made.
I went with the Holley 750 Vacuum secondary, dual feed.
It appears to work well and is not running too rich.
I'm liking it, it's weekend and I'm driving again!
I think stingray 76 hit it just right. I had a similar problem recently wheras I sucked some varnish from the tank and it clogged the idle circuit jets. The car would start because the primary pump would put enough gas in to start , but, the carb. would not run with vacuum alone (idle). Did a check list and took the carb apart and sprayed gumout throughout all ports/jets. Put back together and it ran fine. Before I started it I put two fuel filters in series to catch any more crap from the tank. A couple days later started to experience the same problem but not as severe. I started to think about it a bit and thought that maybe the ethanol had started eating away the old rubber line from the filter to the carb and shurer than poop, took the carb apart again and there was little peices of what looked like rubber in the bowls. Did the gumout thing again and bought new fuel lines and haven't had a problem since. The carb I have is an Edelbrock performer and I must say it is very easy to take apart and the gasket is above the gas level of the bowl so it will not leak.
Good luck.
The Holley I used was the 80508S. http://www.holley.com/0-80508S.asp
Keep in mind that I am not recommending it. I still think one closer to a 650 would be better.
The 750 and the 670 were the only ones I could find that would get me on the road this weekend. I think the 750 is fast, but leaves a little on the table in the quick area. I'm still adjusting and I may get that worked out yet!
BTY: that 67 that you were talking to me about is now resto-modded and will be in the Carlisle Chip's Choice next month. Look for the Marina Blue one with the white hood stripe.
