Default Convertable hatch spring

My passanger side 1965 convertable hatch spring broke from rust. I ordered a new one and repaired the weatherstrip that caused the leaking water that caused the rust. My question is how do I get that darn spring back on? I had my neighbor who is a powerlifter and a leverage system that could alter the Earths rotation if used for evil and still the spring could not be stretched enough. How do I get this spring back on?

I made a mini spring extender/compresser with a long bolt and a couple of fender washers that I bent up the ends. I just ran the nut out to extended the spring, then backed it off to ease it back on.

Just stretch it out with your floor jack and insert wood shims to hold it out. Here is a pic of one of our forum members showing how it's done..

Dave, that is trick...I shouldn't be surprised at your cleverness. It's funny, I just found my two springs this week...been lost for 6-8 years. Now I can "git 'er done". Dennis

Dennis, wish I could take the credit for that one. I forget who originally posted to do that but it works great. I'm sorry that I never got the measurement that you wanted. I've been extremely busy and out of the Country for the last few weeks. Do you still need it? Dave

Glad to help, Just to clarify install it with the decklid closed. Then open it up and the shims will fall out.

Don't you mean install with lid open (spring is smallest), then close the lid to elongate the spring to remove the shims?
