Has anyone experienced any problems due to today's pump gas ?? I've been running Sunoco 93 in my '66 small block for years without any problems until recently. My plugs look a little lean instead of having a little bit of black carbon (like they always did) and the car really stumbles when you accelerate from slow or stop. I've done nothing new to the car except added new 3/8" fuel line from the pump to the carb with a Jegs high flow in-line filter. It previously had 1/4" (with in-line filter) but I don't see how that messed anything up. Floats and idle mixture are adjusted properly on a Holley 750 vacume sec carb. Also...., I'm running the original dist with points. The car doesn't break up at higher RPMs (no points bounce) so I'm thinking the electrical parts are ok so I'm thinking it must be fuel related. Could the 10% ethanol that most gas stations are selling today be the culprit ?? Should I increase jet size to richen it a bit ?? Advise requested please................
In this area, the bigger retailers have water monitors in the underground tanks. The tanks have to be periodically pumped. If they're not, it's possible to get some water in your fuel, or maybe even a whole lot. This has nothing to do with the ethanol fuel though.
I've been told by my retailer that you're most likely to pick up some water, just after the underground tank has been filled and it gets stirred up or, if the retailer regularly allows his tanks to run very low and doesn't keep his tanks cleared of water.
A few months ago, there were two closed van trucks parked on his property for two days. One of the guys with the trucks told me they were re-circulating and removing bacteria that grows in underground gasoline tanks. He claimed it was a regular practice at some gas stations.
Don't know but I wouldn't worry about the gasahol formula because it's commonly used all over the country.
A few weeks back I filled my '64 Riviera (OM 425 w/10.25:1 cr) with some bargain 7-11 unleaded at $3.59 a gallon and the thing ran noticeably worse until I ran most of that tank out. Refiiled with some fuel from another vendor and it's back to normal. There are quite a few gas stations here in Oklahoma that now advertise "100% gasoline" or "no corn in our gas !". I now happily pay the extra 20 cents a gallon.
