Differential fill plug
The spare tire carrier and the rear leaf spring are prohibiting easy access to a tight fitting fill plug on my '66 differential. Any suggestions? thanks
There is an SAE socket that fits the square pattern of the plug very well. You can get up in there with a socket, a universal extension, and a ratchet. Believe it or not you can also get a standard bottle of gear lube up there to fill it without a hose!
I purchased a complete set of 8 pt sockets from Sears (Craftsman) many years ago just for this plug, and to have for any future needs on the car. Found that my differential plug was off-size, and NONE of the new sockets fit. After a bit of trial and error, the best fit was obtained with one of my standard 12 pt sockets. No further problems.
Suggest you try various 12 pt sockets to see if you can get an acceptable (good) fit prior to buying the 8 pt. Take some care when using to avoid rounding-off the plug.
