Default Valve Cover Question

I'm looking for a new set of valve covers for my 56 Chevy. I want a finned cover with either the "CORVETTE" script or "CHEVROLET" script. Anyone familiar with these covers? Has anyone seen them with their own eyeballs?

http://www.yourcovers.com/vc_11026.shtml

I need to have breather holes in both covers.

These covers have a debossed area machined on the vertical surface near one of the mounting bolts where PCV systems can be adapted by drilling a hole.

These are also advertised as "mid height", but they don't say how tall they are. I need a tall set to clear roller rockers and stud girdles.

Anyone familiar with these?

Chuck

Chuck, I saw a set (the big block ones) at BJ in 2007. They looked pretty good. Ecklers sells them too. They may be able to answer your questions. (I also recall from the web site that they will cut the PCV holes for you.) Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Chuck,
Go to a dealership and ask for the Chevrolet High Performance Parts Catalog. Usually at Carlisle at the Chevy Performance Part Tent they have them. Last time I saw them was in that catalog...hope this helps. I had a set on my 96 Camaro with breathers

Thanks, Colin.

They are a licensed GM Restoration Part. I'd just like to know how "tall" they are.

Chuck:

I don't know if the two big warehouses (Jegs & Summit) have them. When I was looking for valve covers I called Summit and the lady who answered the phone had someone pull a set from the warehouse and take measurements for me. Was really nice of them to do that.

If your Chevy dealer has a set it would make life easy.

The ones in your pic have the "Chevrolet" script logo. They also make the same cover with the "Corvette" script logo. The catalog vendors sell them for about $475.00 per pair. You can get them direct from the manufacturer for about $375.00 per pair. Check my link above to PML, the manufacturer.

There is a debossed area on each cover where you can machine a hole for a rubber grommet. You then put the PCV "stuff" in those holes.

I measured the VC's on my car now. From the bottom of the flange to the highest point on the cover is a tick under 4".

I measured the VC's on my Chevy again. Of course, they're on the car. I used a slide caliper. AND to the best of my ability......

From the bottom of the flange to the top of the VC, they're about 3 7/8 inch.

From the top of the flange, they're 3 7/16 inch.

Many of the catalogs refer to "tall". Some give measurements. Before I shell out close to $400.00, I want to make sure they'll clear the roller rockers and stud girdles.

Here. They'll drill it "grommet size" for you.

Is there a built in baffle behind that debossed area where the PCV grommet would go? I'm thinking of going this route. I read that there are grommets made with a baffle design built into them too if the VC don't have it. Do these have the drip rails underneath too?

No drippers on the SB version. Not sure about any baffles.

the covers from PML already have the baffles built in on the underside, you just need to drill the hole for the PCV and the breather.

Chuck, you will still need to figure a way for oil fill.........

If you follow a link on the PML web page you will come to a dimensioned drawing that shows interior and exterior dimensions:

http://www.yourcovers.com/valve_cove...11026_dims.pdf

This drawing shows an interior height of 2.7" which can probably be made to clear normal height polyloks for roller rockers, but probably won't clear the tall style needed for a stud girdle.

Thanks, Jim.

I missed that link. Says 3.1 inch overall height, 2.7 internal.

My "overall" height on the current custom valve covers on the car is 3 7/8 inches, so I'm not so sure these would clear the rockers.

I have seen valve cover spacers, designed to increase the height, but I would think that these would be prone to leakage.

Barry:

You're right about adding oil, but I thought I could remove one grommet and use that for an oil fill. Would be awkward, but could be done.

I just like the "look" of these covers. The ones on my 56 now are pretty common. You see them on about every 5th Chevrolet you look at wandering through any given car show.
