How do I tell what year the Muncie in my 57 is? My serial number is too low for the transmission to be a four speed but it could possibly be a 57 I just don't know how to read the codes???
Which do you have, a T10 or a Muncie???????????
They are NOT the same. The T10 is a Borg-Warner tranny. The B-W T-10 has a 9-bolt side cover, and, depending on what vintage it is, it can have a cast iron case (early) or an alum main case (late).
ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Muncies are alum ONLY and have a 7-bolt side cover.
57's had case iron cased BW T-10's, aluminum cased T-10's were fazed in during 1960. The Muncie replaced the T-10 in May 1963.
T-10's had a date stamped on the left (drivers side), upper, rear corner of the case, on a machined pad just past the side cover. Stamped first would be a "W" for Warner followed by a letter "A" through "L" indicating the month ("A" = Jan., etc.), one or two numbers for the day and a single letter for the year. Example: W C167 would be Warner ("W"), March ("C"), 16th (16), 1957 (7).
Muncie dates are stamped on the right side of the case, by where the tail housing bolts up. Muncie dating method varied depending on the era that it was produced.
