Default BB casting date location

Hey folks,

SORRY - HEADER IS WRONG - LOOKING FOR CASTING #, NOT DATE.

Looking to find out where the Casting # would be for a '67 -'68 396 car. The engine is in a Camaro and I looked around the rear driver side area but couldn't find anything. I know some "early Big Blocks" have the casting # on the side of the block on the passenger side of the engine - should this be the case for this block?

I think the block should be a 3902406, 3916323, or a 3935440 casting #.

As always, thanks in advance!!

RC,

The 396 option was only available in the Corvette for the 1965 model year(mid to late production only). The correct casting number for this block is 3855962.

1967 & 1968 big blocks were all 427ci for the Corvettes.

Just to clarify, the casting number should be on the left (drivers) side for 67-68 big blocks (Corvette or otherwise).

Thanks Joel - is it in the back of the block on the top (like where it would be for a SB like my '58 739 block location) or is it down the side, on the back or some other location? I am hoping to be able to see the casting while the engine is installed in the car, but couldn't find it when I looked.

Thanks!!!

Brett,

I think my post is misleading (not on purpose) - the engine is for and in a camaro, not a corvette. I am a C1 guy and trust the knowledge of the participants of this forum. I figured the casting # info would be year specific, not car specific so thought I would ask the ones I trust.

About a month ago I decided to get a little brother for my C1 and thought a camaro made sense.

sorry for any confusion.

It's on the rear flange of the block on the driver's side, just like on a small-block.
