Hi!!

I wonder what type of engine my car was delivered from the factory?
Can you guys here help me out?

The car is a Corvette -66 convertible.

The car has factory sidepipe and the rpm meter has a grade like the 427 has.

Can the numers on the chassie help?

Hope you can help me

No, the numbers won't give you any indication of what engine was originally in the car. Any car can be made to look original with a small block or a big block.

First thing you need to look at is whether or not the hood prop is on the drivers side. Small block cars come with the prop on the passenger side and the big blocks (except 65 396 cars) came with it on the drivers side. It is really difficult to hide the fact that the hood prop has been moved although it can be and has been done.

Other than that you can look at the rear carrier. If the numbers on the rear carrier match the car serial number and the half shaft u-joints are held on with caps and bolts rather than u-bolts. it is likely a big block car.

Lastly, look for a rear sway bar. Check the diameter of the front sway bar. It should be larger than the small block unit and the big block had the additional rear unit. I don't know off hand the diameters that they should be but someone will chime in to help out.

Those are the only things I can think of. Maybe someone else know some other items that are tell tale signs.

On the back of the dash cluster there are two rather large white stickers, side by side, that have two letters. Mine says LC,which translates to 327,350hp. I believe this was done to tell the cluster builder what size engine the cluster was going to be matched up with so they would know what size tach and oil pressure gauge to install. Of course this only works if your car still has the original cluster. Since clusters are not repro'd,must people restore their original cluster so there is a good chance yours is original.
