Hey guys, remember when I talked about restoring the hardtop on the 60 back a few months ago and I seemed to get a few ha ha's. Well, I can see why But, I must say it is all back together and looking great except for the back glass. I am DYING here!!!!!
When putting on my stainless molding on the bottom of the back glass, my stupid plastic retainer that I gave $280.00 for keeps popping out when I tighten the barrel nuts. I have taken it back off several times and made sure it was snapped into the stainless well, but it just seems to pop right back off when I install it around the w/strip.
I'm almost at a GIVE UP spot Can anyone help?????????
Doug, I think 61 is different than mine. I said plastic, but they call it something else. My original was metal and was a pain getting out of the stainless, but I never dreamed it would be this hard getting back in.
And yes.....I've called the guys at Glassworks and Larry is very helpful, but it just ain't working.
I probably will get the whole piece from CC, I just wanted to stay with original stainless molding, but I'm giving up!
It's impossible to tell without pics. but, does the stainless trim fit correctly? Did you replace the back window? I've never seen a replacement window (OEM or Repo.) that didn't need to be trimmed in order to fit correctly and allow the trim to fit as well. If the trim fits the way it should, the retainer shouldn't pull loose. If you have to force the trim to fit, the window needs work.
Jim, I thought I was going crazy until your post. The back glass is not fitting well but the guys at Glassworks said just keep working with it. It is off at both sides.
However, my retainer does fit. That's strange isn't it! But without the retainer going inside the stainless it must not be doing well.
Please,,,Please tell me more about trimming the glass.
I wish there was an easy explanation. The only advice on trimming I can give is to do a very small amount at a time. The last one I did, I must have removed/trimmed/installed, removed/trimmed/installed at least a dozen times to get it to fit. To say the are a b!tch to get perfect would be the understatement of the year.
One hint I can give is to mark the area you need to trim with masking tape and then use a belt sander to trim to the edge of the tape. GO SLOWLY.
I am still not clear about the replacement piece you are talking about, it is something that replaces the original steel piece that went inside the original stainless reveal lower molding? The steel strip that had the studs welded to it? the steel peice that always rusted out?
On a side note, if I knew then what I know now, i would have trimmed the lower sides about 1/8" and upper top sides about the same, of the new rear window when i rebuilt the top, to make the rear bow fit the deck better so it disn't rise as much in the center.
Doug, you sure are correct when you say the steel piece that rusts alot with the studs connected. But let me tell you, it's alot better than the stupid replacement piece. It comes now polycarbonate with Dettached studs. It's very flimsy and does not fit good! You suppose to be able to pop it in the stainless molding and live happy ever after
That's a laugh!
And thanks Jim for the advice. I quess I'll start trimming and see what happens.
