Default Interior Screw Package Correctness?

Hey Gang!

So, I got dinged on the randomness of the screws throughout the interior of my 64 coupe when it was judged this summer, so I thought I'd pick up one of the 'complete' packages that is offered. But, I want to make sure that the package I get is as 'correct' as possible. I'm also looking to replace a few other trim items such while I'm in there. Should brighten it up a bit.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Check the judging manual for the correct size and eyelets, if it used eyelets. 53 door panels use a chrome #8 screw and #10 eyelet.

I know nothing of the screw packages, but I can tell you that in 63 and 64, a number of special screws with integral washers were use around the radio side panels and the kick panels.

You can find them at swap meets.

Here's what you want for the kick panels and several of the spots in the radio side panels.

Currently on EBAY. Search 63 Corvette Screws.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

There are not really any swap meets for stuff like this around here. I'm looking to buy a package on-line. There is one at Eckler's -> here, $25.49 for a 125 pc set. They have lots of other kits to make up what may not be in the 'complete' set.

Thing is, they don't explicitly say that it is 'correct' - although it may well be.

Corvette Central sells sets for individual components, but not a complete set, it seems.

I think Corvette America sells a set as well.

I was wondering if anyone knows if any of these (or other) sets are more 'correct' than others.

I'll go out on a limb and say that probably NONE of them are correct.

They'll send you a bunch of chrome phillips trim screws with washers.

You may want to check with Nabers Brothers. They'll know where to get them.

as Chuck mentions - there is NO ONE that produces a CORRECT complete screw set - they only way you will find correct screws is to monitor eBabe and go to swap meets, estate sales, auctions, etc. - Paragon and Doc Rebuild are two places I would check for sets that are probably the "closest" to being correct - all others don't pass muster

I don't think anyone has broke the code on correctness and China.

I agree with Chuck. It is easy enough to find straight out tapered head phillips screws, but any screw that has a special moulded head, internal collar, etc. such as those used with the carpet kick panel, radio side panel and convertible quarter panel behind the seat, I have not found an exact reproduction. Thus, I scout the swap meets. I suggest you call a restoration business and maybe they will let something loose from their stash or can tell you where to go...to find it that is. Gary

I would also try the junk yards...MANY of the 60s era GM cars used the same screws....they weren't anything special for a Corvette. You can probably go and get as many screws as you want for nothing.

For correctness sake, let me correct my previous post.

The pic I posted shows the kick panel screws.

The side radio panel and also the rear panel that covers the convertible top mechanism uses a different screw.

Those screws look similar, but have no free spinning washer, and are flatter/not as tall.

I don't think anybody repops them. You'll find them at flea markets, and on EBAY. You can try junk-yarding, but virtually all of the old cars have disappeared from the junk yards in my area.

MANY of the interior screws are just chrome phillips trim screws. They're sold by many vendors, and come in many sizes, i.e. length, head size and thread size.

There are also the so called Johnson?? screws (Jackson? screws) which are a smaller head on a larger thread, such as a #6 head on a #8 screw.

Default screws

For my 59, I bought three different interior screw sets from two vette venders and an ebay seller. I did this so that I would have some spares. Mine is a driver so I just wanted something close that looked nice. All three sets were slightly different, from head size, length and even the finish washers were different. To top it off, the screws/washers that came with the new door panels were different.
